Eurogastro 2011 was organised one year before the Euro 2012 Championships. Makro’s offer was tailored to cater to the needs of small- and medium-sized enterprises preparing to receive Championship guests: restaurants, fast-food outlets, and motels.

The entire stand was divided into three zones: Exhibition, Demo, and Restaurants. The demonstration area involved shows by baristas, bartenders, and chefs. I arranged bar and kitchen tabletops opposite one another, with tables for guests in between. Every exhibition day began with a coffee brewing show. Chefs then prepared dessert. The bartender took over with refreshing soft drinks, with regular Polish, Italian, and fast-food cuisine shows by professional chefs closing the day.

The chefs’ station was fitted with state-of-the art catering devices, enabling the presentation and popularisation of leading standards in catering. Chef shows were beamed onto large-screen displays for viewing comfort. A professional sound system ensured perfect audio reception in the viewing area without affecting other zones.

In the Exhibition zone, visitors could actually encounter all products used by professionals during shows: from coffee to pasta. Stands arranged by theme and graphic design facilitated product identification: Rioba, Kuchnia Polska (Polish Cuisine), Pizza/Pasta.

The launch of a fully equipped Gastro trailer, a new arrival in Makro’s offer, was a separate event on the agenda. In view of the upcoming Championships, the product enjoyed considerable interest.

A broad range of Horeca Select industrial products was shown at 2011 for the second time. These products are well known to their users and require no direct user contact, which is why I decided to exhibit them in an enormous “sideboard” between the bar and the kitchen areas. The black-and-white six-metre tall RGB-illuminated sideboard holding metal products was very striking.

H-Line industrial products for hotels and restaurants were shown in “rooms” on a turntable stand. The round stand was divided into four areas: bedroom, bathroom, buffet, and restaurant table. All products were displayed in natural surroundings.

Makro customers brought in by coach from throughout Poland were welcomed in a restaurant room with seating for sixty and open kitchen space, allowing guests to watch meals being prepared, with a Ramsay Gordon-style anchor. The kitchen prepared approximately three hundred three-course meals per day. Two cameras were constantly filming the kitchen area, with footage shown on a large in-house screen display.

All these complicated activities required a fully equipped backstage and technical support section, placed behind the exhibition space.

The Makro 2011 stand design was hugely appreciated, as proven by the use of the Nonfood display solution at the Makro facility in Gdańsk (see the Nonfood Display project), and the multiple use of the Rioba bar at a number of functions in the years 2011 and 2012, as described under the Coffee, Coffee Machines, Accessories project.
