Makro’s Effective Business Academy is a unique project across Europe.
Makro has been engaging in the business of training small- and medium-sized companies for years. And yet Poland is the only country to have a facility where the following divisions organise practical training courses under a single roof:
Retail Trade Guidance Centre
World of Presents (Świat Prezentów)
An existing single-storey building was adapted to meet the Academy’s requirements. Space layout had to be redesigned to fit the following divisions:
• World of Restaurants • World of Retail • World of Presents • Conference rooms • Shared space • Office, social, warehousing, and sanitary facilities.

Upon entering the building, it was crucial to retain open and friendly space while using resources and materials available to an average Makro customer. I designed all zones to meet in a shared hallway accessed via the main entrance. A cafe was set up in the middle of the hallway, surrounded with comfortable sofas and display platforms. A huge skylight filled the hallway with light and optically elevated the roof. I arranged first-floor wings in a way preserving the hallway height; an upper-level window affords a marvellous view of the hall below.
The entrance area palm trees are a recent addition I had not suggested.
Upon entry, model shops and the World of Presents showroom are visible to the left. The reception area and Horeca Centre are to the right. Three conference rooms with removable partitioning to create one large room have been placed behind the cafe.
Each conference room has its own multimedia system.
The first floor houses offices as well as sanitary and warehouse facilities.
Designing a model restaurant was the main challenge, as all the functionalities listed had to be included: model restaurant kitchen with a lecture hall and practical training workstations; a humidor room for sommelier and waiting staff trainees; and a bar room for bartender and barista trainees.

This is how we created a large open-space kitchen with a multimedia system, ventilated ceiling, and draining system. The kitchen has been fitted with all equipment and devices used in modern catering: fast-food to Oriental cuisine. An amphitheatrical lecture hall and an amphitheatrical hall with twelve practical training workstations (for twenty-four chefs working simultaneously) have been placed on either side of the kitchen. The tutor has an identical workstation filmed from above, with the image beamed onto two large-screen displays. The sound system makes the lecture audible at every end of the hall. Thanks to all these solutions, trainees can focus on their work and learn more effectively. Such classes serve knowledge as well as fun and integration purposes.
I wanted to use modest resources to create a hygienic and visually attractive location. I added decor to regular tiles, applied ornamental lighting, used granite in assistant countertops, mounted ornamental knife-shaped countertops supports, and used colour wherever possible.

Special attention had to be paid to the humidor, the wine storage space. I used EuroCave, a dedicated temperature and moisture control system; when mounted, it resembles a loudspeaker flush against the wall. To impact temperature to the least extent possible, I used LED lighting and panes with a high thermal insulation factor. I designed a special wine shelving system with a variety of storage solutions. Clinker wall tiles enhance the atmosphere of a wine cellar. The humidor flanks the sommelier and waiting staff training room, designed in warm colours with intimate spot lighting to evoke an atmosphere typical for the students’ workplace.
A bar counter was erected for bartender and barista training purposes, fitted with every device used at a modern bar. This room was adorned with graphics of the Rioba brand available at Makro facilities.
During the summer season the Horeca Centre organises barbecue training courses – an original outdoor garden was designed and developed to the purpose.
The functionality of the building has been proven trustworthy over the many years of operation, while Makro’s Effective Business Academy continues enjoying considerable appreciation by company customers.
